Senator Christopher S. Murphy of Connecticut was hospitalized on 31 October 2026 after suffering a stroke. His chief of staff, Allison Herwitt, said the 53-year-old Democrat began experiencing numbness in his arm while attending his son’s hockey game on Saturday. He was taken to a local hospital, where doctors diagnosed a stroke, and later transferred to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore for monitoring and treatment.
Herwitt stated that doctors are encouraged by his progress, that Murphy is awake and alert, and that the team is optimistic he will make a full recovery. A spokesman declined to provide further medical details on Sunday. Murphy had been scheduled to campaign in New Hampshire on 1 November with Democratic candidates for Senate and House seats.
Murphy has served in the Senate since 2013 after six years in the House. He is widely viewed as a possible 2028 presidential candidate and has focused on gun safety legislation since the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting, affordable health care, and foreign policy. He had been traveling extensively in recent weeks to support Democratic candidates in competitive midterm races, including stops in Michigan, Minnesota and Florida.
Fellow senators offered public messages. Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman, who survived a near-fatal stroke during his 2022 campaign, wrote that he understands the impact and is rooting for a full recovery. President Donald Trump told reporters he was surprised by the news and would consider reaching out at an appropriate time. Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont and Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz also issued statements wishing Murphy a speedy recovery. Lamont noted he had been with Murphy only two days earlier encouraging voters.
Three other Senate Democrats have had strokes in recent years and recovered. The timing removes an active campaigner from the final stretch before Tuesday’s midterms, though Murphy is not himself on the ballot this cycle. No further updates on his condition had been released by early afternoon on 2 November.
