Connecticut Democratic Senator Chris Murphy suffered a stroke on November 1 while attending his son's hockey game. His chief of staff, Allison Herwitt, said the 53-year-old began experiencing numbness in his arm and was taken to a local hospital, where doctors diagnosed a stroke. He was later transferred to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore for monitoring and treatment.
Herwitt stated that doctors are encouraged by his progress. "He is awake and alert, and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery." A spokesman declined to provide additional medical details on Sunday. Murphy had been scheduled to campaign in New Hampshire that day alongside Democratic candidates Chris Pappas and Stefany Shaheen.
Murphy has represented Connecticut in the Senate since 2013 after six years in the House. He has been one of the most visible Democratic voices on gun safety legislation since the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting in his state. He has also focused on foreign policy, health care costs and opposition to President Donald Trump's agenda. Some Democrats have mentioned him as a possible 2028 presidential contender.
In recent weeks Murphy had traveled to competitive races in Michigan, Minnesota, Florida and other states to support Democratic candidates ahead of the November 4 midterms. Connecticut Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz said she had been with him the evening before the stroke and that he was energetically encouraging voters. Governor Ned Lamont issued a statement wishing him a quick return to the campaign trail.
Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman, who suffered a stroke during his 2022 campaign, posted that his family was rooting for Murphy. "As someone who survived a near-fatal stroke, I understand all too well how much this impacts your life," Fetterman wrote. Other senators from both parties offered public well-wishes. President Trump told reporters he was surprised by the news and would consider reaching out at an appropriate time.
Murphy is the fourth Senate Democrat to experience a stroke in recent years. Senators Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico and Chris Van Hollen of Maryland recovered from strokes in 2022. Fetterman continues to use live captioning tools in the chamber. Medical teams typically monitor stroke patients for secondary risks and begin rehabilitation once the acute phase passes.
No further public updates on Murphy's condition were released by late November 1. His office has said the priority is treatment and recovery. The midterm elections continue without his planned appearances. Colleagues and constituents have expressed support while awaiting additional information from his medical team.
