Secret Service opens file on Iranian TV segment naming Barron Trump

The US Secret Service said on 25 August it is investigating a video broadcast on Iranian state television that discusses killing Barron Trump, the president’s 20-year-old son. Spokesperson Nate Herring said the agency “investigates anything that can be perceived as a threat toward our protectees” and would not discuss protective-intelligence work.

The three-minute segment opened with an English graphic that read “Where to kill Barron Trump.” It labelled him a target, showed a man resembling him, and listed places tied to his movements, including Trump Tower and a Washington address linked to New York University, where he is enrolled. It claimed a $10 million bounty. Iran International, a UK-based outlet, said the footage was released by media linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The White House did not comment the same morning. Barron Trump has kept a thinner public schedule than other members of the family. He appeared with his father at the January 2025 inauguration and is otherwise rarely used as a political prop. He was 10 when Donald Trump first won the presidency.

The broadcast lands inside a nearly six-month war that the United States and Israel opened with Iran in February. Iranian state media have aired threats against the president and his relatives since the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei at the start of that war, and have long cited the January 2020 US strike that killed General Qasem Soleimani. Donald Trump has said he is “number one on the kill list for Iran.” Reuters reported earlier this month that Israel has passed Washington several warnings over the past year that Iran intended to assassinate the president, including before a covert Air Force One movement in Turkey.

Secret Service Deputy Director Matt Quinn told reporters last month that Iran has said in public it wants to kill the president. He asked for resources to cover a threat list that now includes foreign services and domestic groups at the same time. Naming a child of the president on state television, with a dollar figure and a campus address, moves that list from the principal to the family detail.

Herring’s statement is the entire official record. There is no US confirmation that a live cell is in the United States, and no Iranian government statement claiming the segment as policy. The tape exists. The graphic exists. The agency has opened the file. How it changes Barron Trump’s movements at NYU and in New York is the part the Secret Service will not describe.
