At least 32 children and one teacher died on 15 October 2026 when the roof of a private school collapsed in Peshawar, Pakistan. The incident occurred at the Al-Khair Education Center in Dir Colony shortly after classes began. Emergency services were alerted at 08:48 local time. Hospital officials at Lady Reading Hospital reported the deaths of 32 students aged between six and 14 and a 25-year-old female teacher. Additional injured children were taken to the same hospital and to Naseerullah Khan Babar Memorial Hospital. Some remained in critical condition with head injuries.
Rescue teams extracted at least 45 children from the rubble. Police said roughly 110 students were present in the three affected classrooms: about 30 on the top floor, 40 on the middle floor, and 45 on the ground floor. The collapse began on an upper floor and brought down ceilings below it. Peshawar Capital City Police Officer Mian Saeed Ahmed stated that the three-storey structure was overloaded, that the concrete slabs were substandard, and that the building was extremely dangerous with a risk of further collapse. He described the failure as gross negligence and said an investigation would examine building-code violations.
The school owner was arrested. Deputy Commissioner Afaq Wazir ordered a probe. Local residents were among the first to reach the site in the congested neighbourhood and helped pull some children free. One parent said his son survived because he had stepped out of the classroom to drink water. An English teacher from a nearby school described hearing sirens and joining the rescue effort.
Heavy overnight rain was cited by some rescue officials as a contributing factor that may have destabilised the roof. Earlier reports varied on the exact death toll as bodies continued to arrive at hospitals; the figure stabilised around 32 children plus the teacher. All the deceased children were 13 or younger. The provincial government formed a committee to investigate the cause. The collapse follows a separate incident weeks earlier in which a fire at a hospital in Islamabad killed at least 14 newborns.
Pakistan has a large share of students enrolled in private schools, many operating in buildings that were not designed or maintained for educational use. In this case the structure had been described as constructed on a temporary basis with prefabricated roofing elements in places. Police warned people to stay clear of the site because the remaining building was unstable. The incident left parents gathered outside the school and the main hospital seeking information about their children. Medical teams declared an emergency at Lady Reading Hospital to manage the influx of casualties.
The precise sequence of structural failure remains under investigation. Authorities have not yet released a full engineering report, but initial statements from police point to overloaded slabs on a weak frame. The arrest of the owner indicates that investigators are treating the collapse as a preventable failure rather than an unforeseeable accident. Further details on the condition of the injured and any additional recoveries from the rubble are expected as the search continues.
