A Russian first-person-view drone struck a scheduled passenger minibus in Ukraine’s Nikopol district on the morning of 16 September, killing five people at the scene and wounding at least seven. Oleksandr Hanzha, head of the Dnipropetrovsk regional military administration, posted the toll on Telegram. The Prosecutor General’s Office said the vehicle was a route minibus on the highway when it was hit.
Photographs released by the regional administration show a white van with the windows blown out and blood down one side. Mykola Lukashuk, head of the regional council, published a frame of the cracked windshield. The destination board behind the glass still read Pokrov, via Nikopol, to Dnipro. Those three towns sit on the same road. Lukashuk said the passengers were civilians on an ordinary run. “They targeted a minibus which carried people going about their daily business,” he wrote.
Nikopol stands on the Ukrainian bank of the Dnipro. Occupied territory, including the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, sits a few kilometres away on the other side. The town has been under regular fire since 2022 because of that geography. An intercity van on that road is visible from the far bank and from drones that loiter over the district. Hanzha said the seven wounded were under medical care.
Moscow had not commented by the afternoon. Both sides deny a policy of aiming at civilians. The United Nations has said civilian deaths in Ukraine are running at their highest level since the first months of the full-scale invasion. A passenger vehicle on a numbered route is hard to describe as a military target. That is the point Ukrainian officials were making with the photographs.
The strike fits a pattern that has grown as FPV drones have become cheaper and more common along the Dnipro. The operator sees the target until impact. A white minibus on an open highway is a simple picture. Air defence that can stop a cruise missile is the wrong tool for a small drone at road height. Local authorities have no second road that keeps civilian traffic out of line of sight.
Five dead and seven wounded will not move the front. They do record, on one morning, what a short-range drone does to a scheduled service in a district that has been living under that threat for four years. The route from Pokrov through Nikopol to Dnipro will run again. The next van will use the same highway because there is no other one.
