Russia and North Korea open their first road bridge over the Tumen

Russia and North Korea opened a road bridge across the Tumen River on 7 September, the first motor crossing on a border that until now had a railway span and an air service. Flag-draped trucks rolled over the one-kilometre, two-lane deck while Russian prime minister Mikhail Mishustin and North Korean premier Pak Thae Song spoke by video to crews on both banks.

Mishustin called the structure a new symbol of friendship and said it would tie into Russia's federal road net, including the corridor that runs from Vladivostok to St Petersburg. Up to 300 vehicles a day can use the crossing, he said, along with as many as 2,300 people once the new checkpoint is at full staff. The Russian government put the cost at 9 billion rubles, about $104 million. Cargo trucks were cleared to start at once. Passenger traffic is scheduled for the end of the year.

The bridge is named for Yakov Novichenko, a Red Army officer who, in the official story told in Pyongyang, threw himself on a grenade aimed at Kim Il Sung at a 1946 rally and lived. A red Zaporozhets that once belonged to Novichenko led the Russian column at the opening. The older Korea-Russia Friendship Bridge, a rail crossing commissioned in 1959 after the Korean War, still stands nearby.

Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un signed the construction pact during Putin's 2024 visit to Pyongyang. Work began in April 2025. North Korea finished its side before a June 2026 target. Russian delays pushed the opening by several months. The checkpoint sits in Primorsky Krai, opposite North Hamgyong.

The crossing is infrastructure and a political signal. Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, North Korea has supplied ammunition and troops. Russia has sent fuel, food and tourists, the last of those returning from early 2024. A road deck that can take 300 trucks a day is a larger pipe than a single-track rail bridge. What moves across it will be watched by Seoul, Tokyo and Washington as closely as the ceremony speeches.

Mishustin said relations were at an unprecedentedly high level of comprehensive strategic partnership. That language tracks the 2024 treaty. The test of the Novichenko Bridge is quieter: how many loaded trucks clear the new post each week after the cameras leave, and whether passenger buses actually run before December.
