Russia and North Korea open the Yakov Novichenko road bridge over the Tumen
The 1.005-kilometre, two-lane crossing between Khasan and Tumangang opened on 7 September. Mikhail Mishustin and Pak Thae Song joined by video. The only previous fixed link was the 1959 rail Friendship Bridge.

Russia and North Korea opened their first road bridge on 7 September. The crossing spans the Tumen River between Khasan in Primorsky Krai and Tumangang on the North Korean side. Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and North Korean Premier Pak Thae Song joined the ceremony by video link. A parade of vehicles rolled across, led by a restored Zaporozhets that once belonged to Yakov Novichenko, the Soviet officer whose name the bridge now carries.
The girder bridge is 1.005 kilometres long and 7 metres wide, with two lanes. It sits east of the Korea-Russia Friendship Bridge, the rail span commissioned in 1959 after the Korean War. Until Monday that rail bridge was the only fixed link. There are already direct air and rail services between Moscow and Pyongyang. There was no legal road.
Construction started on 30 April 2025 after Vladimir Putin's 2024 visit to North Korea. TunnelYuzhStroy built the Russian works. Mishustin said the job took about 16 months. He called the relationship a comprehensive strategic partnership and said the bridge should help trade, tourism and jobs. Maria Zakharova had earlier called the project a symbol of friendship and said Moscow was paying it special attention.
What the checkpoint is built to process
The bridge is only the river span. The larger Russian crossing project runs about 4.7 kilometres and ties the two customs compounds together. Russia's transport ministry has said the Russian checkpoint is designed for 10 lanes and a daily capacity of 300 vehicles and 2,850 people. Satellite images published around the ceremony showed vehicles on both approaches. Some ancillary buildings on the Russian side were still unfinished. Rosgranstroy notices in September added about $6 million of canopy work to the bill.
North Korea finished its customs and quarantine buildings earlier. A June opening date slipped when the Russian side lagged. As of late August a local official had put the Russian crossing at about 65 percent complete. Monday's ceremony went ahead anyway. TASS and Izvestia treated the span as open to traffic. NK News noted that full commercial use may still wait on the remaining buildings.
Why the road is being read as more than trade
The Tumen here is a thin, remote stretch of border just before the river reaches the sea. A road makes night and winter movements easier to hide from satellites than a single rail line. In July The Guardian reported Ukrainian and investigative claims that the crossing would help military logistics tied to the war in Ukraine, including the movement of North Korean personnel. Kyiv has said Russia expects tens of thousands more North Korean soldiers. Moscow presents the bridge as commerce and tourism.
Novichenko is the political name on the concrete. He is the Soviet officer credited with saving Kim Il Sung from a 1946 assassination attempt by the White Shirts Society. Naming the first road for him writes the old rescue into the new alliance.
Monday's facts that can be stood up: the span exists, it is a kilometre long, it is two lanes, the premiers appeared on a screen, a vintage car led the first crossing, and the rail bridge from 1959 is no longer the only way across. Whether the 300-vehicle daily design is used for ore, tourists or military traffic is the question the cameras on both banks will answer in the coming weeks.
