Russia and North Korea open the Novichenko road bridge over the Tumen

Russia and North Korea opened their first road bridge on 7 September. Flagged trucks crossed the 1-kilometre, two-lane span over the Tumen River in Khasan district, Primorye, while Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and Premier Pak Thae Song spoke by video to crews on both banks.

Until Monday the only fixed overland link was the rail Friendship Bridge, opened in 1959 after the Korean War. The new road bridge is named for Yakov Tikhonovich Novichenko, a Red Army officer who in March 1946 threw himself on a grenade aimed at Kim Il Sung at a Pyongyang rally, survived, and later received North Korea's Hero of Labor title. A red Zaporozhets that once belonged to Novichenko led the Russian column at the ceremony.

Mishustin put the cost at 9 billion rubles, about $104 million. He said the deck can take 300 vehicles a day and will tie into Russia's federal road net and the corridor from Vladivostok to St Petersburg. Interfax, citing the new border post, added a design figure of 2,300 people a day. Cargo trucks were to start at once. Passenger traffic is scheduled once the checkpoint is finished at the end of 2026.

Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un signed the construction agreement during Putin's 2024 visit to Pyongyang. Work began in late April 2025. North Korea finished its side before a 19 June 2026 target. Delays on the Russian bank pushed the opening by several months. Mishustin called the project a "new symbol of friendship" and said relations now sit at an "unprecedentedly high level of comprehensive strategic partnership."

The timing is not only ceremonial. Moscow and Pyongyang signed a mutual defence treaty after Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Rail and air links already moved goods and people. A road deck cuts the last physical gap on a 17-kilometre land border and lowers the cost of trucking compared with breaking bulk onto trains at the old rail bridge.

Western governments have spent two years tracking artillery shells, missiles and labour moving from North Korea to Russia. A 300-vehicle daily cap is modest next to a European motorway. It is large next to a single-track rail bridge from 1959. Customs data will show, within weeks, whether the deck carries timber, fuel, containers or empty political traffic.

The Tumen is shallow at Khasan and freezes in winter. Ice and flood will test the piers more honestly than Monday's speeches. Full passenger use at year end is the first date that can fail in public. Until then the bridge is open for cargo, named for a grenade, and wired into a partnership both capitals now describe without embarrassment.
