Russell Brand was found guilty on November 5 of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault following a four-week trial at Southwark Crown Court in London. He was acquitted of two other rape counts and one count of attempted indecent assault.
The jury deliberated for eight and a half hours before returning the unanimous verdicts. Brand, 51, stood in the dock and showed limited emotion as the results were read. Judge Mr Justice Bennathan told him the convictions mean a custodial sentence of significant length. Brand was remanded in custody and will be sentenced on November 10.
The offences dated from 1999 to 2009 and involved six women who are entitled to lifelong anonymity. Prosecutors described Brand as using his celebrity status during the period when he rose as a stand-up comedian, television and radio host, and film actor. He appeared in Hollywood productions including Get Him to the Greek and Arthur. He is the former husband of Katy Perry.
One conviction involved the rape of a 21-year-old fan after she attended a 2009 performance at the Hammersmith Apollo. Brand took her to his home in Hampstead, north London, where the assault occurred. Other convictions related to sexual assaults, including grabbing a woman's breasts at a Soho bar in 2004 and incidents involving an MTV worker and others in the same timeframe.
Brand denied all charges and maintained that encounters were consensual or that allegations were fabricated. His defence counsel requested bail over the weekend so Brand could see his three children, but the judge refused. Brand's wife, Laura Brand, became emotional as he was led from the dock. Before entering, he told her he loved her.
Senior prosecutor David Roberts of the London rape and serious sexual assault unit stated that Brand used his celebrity status to commit the crimes. It can now be reported that police are investigating two further rape allegations made by other women. Brand has already been questioned in relation to those complaints.
The trial followed a 2023 television documentary and press reports that contained anonymous allegations from additional women. None of the six complainants in this case knew each other before coming forward. Brand had publicly stated a goal of having sex with 5,000 women during the height of his fame.
The judge noted the convictions require a substantial prison term. Sentencing guidelines for rape and sexual assault in the UK typically result in multi-year sentences depending on the specific circumstances and aggravating factors. Brand has been held at a remand facility pending the November 10 hearing.
The case adds to a series of high-profile sexual offence trials involving public figures in Britain. Brand's career had shifted in recent years toward online commentary after earlier television work. The convictions close the criminal proceedings on these particular charges while additional investigations continue.
Court sketches from the verdict day showed Brand facing the judge. The courtroom was crowded for the delivery of the results. The anonymity of the complainants remains protected under UK law regardless of the outcome.
