A jury at Southwark Crown Court in London convicted Russell Brand on Thursday of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault. He was acquitted of two other rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault.
The seven charges involved six women and covered incidents between 1999 and 2009, the period when Brand rose from stand-up comedy to national television and film roles. The jury deliberated for eight and a half hours before returning the unanimous verdicts. Judge Mr Justice Bennathan told Brand he faces a custodial sentence of significant length and remanded him in custody ahead of sentencing on Monday.
Prosecutors described Brand as using his celebrity status to pursue sexual encounters. One conviction concerned the rape of a 21-year-old fan after a 2009 performance at the Hammersmith Apollo. Other convictions involved sexual assaults on women he encountered in professional settings, including a radio station worker and a television employee. The women, who are entitled to lifelong anonymity, testified that the encounters were non-consensual.
Brand, 51, had denied all charges. He maintained that the encounters were consensual or that the allegations were fabricated. He appeared in the dock without visible emotion as the verdicts were read. Police have confirmed he remains under investigation for two additional rape allegations that were not part of this trial.
The case followed a 2023 media investigation that prompted police inquiries. Brand, formerly married to Katy Perry and known for films including Get Him to the Greek, had later shifted toward online commentary and religious content. The convictions cover a specific set of historical allegations rather than his entire public career.
Legal observers noted that the mixed verdicts reflected the jury's assessment of individual evidence on each count. The rape conviction alone carries a substantial minimum sentence under UK guidelines for the relevant period. The three sexual assault convictions will add further time. Monday's hearing will determine the exact term and any concurrent or consecutive elements.
The trial lasted several weeks and included detailed testimony from the complainants. Defense lawyers challenged the reliability of memories from events more than fifteen years earlier and pointed to Brand's public persona at the time. The jury accepted the prosecution case on four of the seven counts.
Brand's conviction removes any remaining prospect of him continuing public work in the UK while serving the sentence. The outcome also reopens questions about institutional responses to allegations against high-profile figures during the 2000s. Further investigations continue on the additional claims.
