Researchers Map Every Wind-Blown Sand Dune on Earth
A complete digital inventory of the planet’s aeolian dunes offers a new baseline for tracking desert expansion, dust storms and landscape change.

A scientist at Monash University has produced the first complete digital map of Earth’s wind-blown sand dunes. The global inventory records the location, size and orientation of dune fields on every continent, including those in polar regions and on remote islands.
Sand dunes are more than scenic features. They store and release vast quantities of mineral dust that fertilises oceans and forests, influence local climate, and can bury infrastructure or agricultural land when they migrate. Until now, no single dataset captured their full distribution at high resolution.
Dr Andrew Gunn combined satellite imagery, topographic data and automated classification techniques to build the map. The resulting catalogue shows that dunes occupy far more of the planet’s surface than earlier estimates suggested, particularly in semi-arid transition zones that are expanding under changing rainfall patterns.
The map provides a baseline against which future changes can be measured. Researchers studying desertification, dust-borne disease, or the impact of climate shifts on dryland ecosystems now have a standardised reference. It also helps identify regions where dune migration may threaten roads, railways or settlements in the coming decades.
Simple as the idea sounds—cataloguing every dune—the practical achievement is substantial. It turns a fragmented set of regional studies into a coherent global picture of one of Earth’s most mobile landforms.
