Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi told a large INDIA bloc rally at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar had committed treason by stealing the voice of citizens. Gandhi said Kumar would be removed from office and would go to jail. The statement came during a gathering of opposition parties focused on allegations of electoral irregularities.
Gandhi has repeatedly used the phrase "vote chori" to describe what he and other opposition leaders call systematic manipulation of voter rolls and polling processes. The rally drew crowds from multiple INDIA alliance parties. Speakers targeted the Election Commission over recent revisions to electoral rolls and the handling of complaints from opposition candidates.
Gyanesh Kumar took office as Chief Election Commissioner earlier in 2026. Opposition parties have accused the commission of bias in the preparation of voter lists and in the conduct of recent by-elections and state polls. The government and the Election Commission have rejected the charges and said all procedures follow existing law. No criminal complaint naming Kumar has been filed in connection with the claims made at the rally.
The Ramlila Maidan event formed part of a series of opposition gatherings ahead of upcoming state elections and the next national cycle. Organizers estimated attendance in the tens of thousands. Security arrangements closed surrounding roads for several hours. Gandhi spoke after other alliance leaders had addressed the crowd on issues including unemployment, inflation and the special intensive revision of electoral rolls.
Previous opposition statements have called for Kumar's resignation. The new language of treason and imprisonment marks an escalation in public rhetoric. Legal experts note that criminal liability for an election commissioner would require a formal investigation and charge under specific statutes; political speeches do not themselves initiate such proceedings.
The Election Commission has not issued an immediate public response to the rally remarks. In earlier statements the body has said it remains independent and that any specific evidence of malpractice should be submitted through official channels. Opposition parties have said they will continue to document alleged irregularities and present them to courts and the commission.
The INDIA bloc includes the Congress, Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress and several regional parties. Coordination among them has varied by state. The Delhi rally was one of the larger joint appearances in recent months. Gandhi's remarks were widely circulated on social media within hours of the event.
With multiple state elections scheduled in the coming months, both the government and the opposition are treating the integrity of the electoral process as a central campaign issue. The commission continues its normal schedule of roll revisions and poll preparations while the political argument over its conduct continues in public forums and, potentially, in the courts.
