Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Canada on 11 and 12 December 2026, Indian officials confirmed on Friday. The trip follows a recent telephone conversation between Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in which both sides agreed to build on improving bilateral momentum.
The agenda is expected to cover trade, energy, technology, security cooperation and people-to-people links. Relations between the two countries deteriorated sharply in 2023 after Canada alleged Indian involvement in the killing of a Sikh separatist on Canadian soil, an accusation India rejected. Diplomatic staff were expelled on both sides, and high-level contacts were suspended. Recent months have seen a gradual thaw, with the December visit marking the first by an Indian prime minister to Canada since the crisis.
Canadian officials have indicated interest in expanding energy and critical-minerals cooperation as Canada seeks to diversify supply chains. Indian officials have emphasised the size of the Indian diaspora in Canada and the potential for technology partnerships. Security discussions are likely to address residual concerns over extremism and intelligence cooperation.
No joint statements or specific agreements have been announced in advance. The visit will test whether the two governments can convert the recent positive tone into concrete outcomes after three years of strained relations. For India, the trip forms part of a broader effort to stabilise ties with major Western partners while managing domestic political sensitivities around diaspora politics. For Canada, it offers an opportunity to re-engage one of the world’s largest emerging markets.
Details of the itinerary and any accompanying business or ministerial delegations have not yet been released. The announcement itself confirms that high-level political contact has resumed.
