President Droupadi Murmu used Teachers' Day on Saturday, 5 September, to set a short list of jobs for the profession. Teachers, she wrote, should form students who hold a scientific outlook and who move with the idea of nation first. She called it a sacred duty to guide pupils to be good human beings. The date is observed on the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, scholar and former president.
In the morning she conferred the National Teachers Awards on 48 school teachers at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi. Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi attended with ministers of state Jayant Chaudhary and Sukanta Majumdar. Prime Minister Narendra Modi later posed with the group. The awards are the state's annual way of naming classroom work in public, one teacher at a time, rather than as a sector average.
Murmu's article is not a policy paper. It is an instruction about temperament. A scientific outlook, in the language of Indian education documents, means a habit of asking for evidence and of refusing superstition as an explanation. Nation first is a political phrase as well as a civic one. Putting both in the same sentence tells teachers they are being asked to form citizens, not only examinees.
That double brief lands in a system that is already being asked to do more on screens. The National Testing Agency has begun talking to AICTE about mapping spare rooms and computer labs so that exams such as NEET can move onto a national computer-based grid. Teachers who collected awards on Saturday still work in rooms where the next high-stakes test may arrive as a login rather than a sealed envelope. The award and the grid are parts of the same year.
Teachers' Day in India is also a calendar event that political leaders attend. Modi was in Delhi for the SRCC centenary as well as the photograph with awardees. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was photographed with children at Janmashtami events in Gorakhpur. The profession is praised in the morning and measured by board results in the evening. Murmu's note tries to insert character between those two poles.
Forty-eight names do not stand in for millions of teachers. They do give the ministry a list it can send back to states as proof that the centre still sees school work. Recipients go home to the same classrooms. The test of the day is whether a scientific outlook is protected when a lesson plan collides with a local demand to skip a chapter, or when a laboratory has no working gas tap.
Radhakrishnan's own career ran from a classroom to Rashtrapati Bhavan. The holiday that uses his birthday has become a stage for the current president to say what she wants that classroom to produce. This year the product is a student who can handle evidence and who will put the country first. Schools will translate that as they can. The 48 teachers who stood at Vigyan Bhavan are the named examples the rest of the system is being asked to match.
