Pope Leo XIV said on 11 October 2026 during his Sunday Angelus that doctors found a circumscribed nodule on his lung during recent medical checks. He described it as detected at a very early stage and well localised. Following medical advice, he decided to have it removed by surgery in the coming days. The 71-year-old pontiff made the announcement himself in St Peter’s Square.
The Vatican press office stated that Leo will be admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on the morning of 13 October. Recovery is expected to take about one week. The hospital has a dedicated papal apartment used by previous popes, including John Paul II and Francis. No information has been released on whether the nodule is considered malignant. Lung nodules smaller than three centimetres are often benign. The American Thoracic Society notes that fewer than five percent ultimately prove cancerous, though risk rises with age and size.
This is the first major health event of Leo’s pontificate, which began on 8 May 2025 after the death of Francis. Leo, born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago, has no previously reported health problems and maintains an active routine that includes tennis and swimming. He said he still intends to make his planned 6–17 November trip to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru. Vatican officials indicated he might miss the closing Mass of a family ministry conference on 15 October.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed personal and government closeness. Argentina’s bishops’ conference called for prayers for a swift recovery. Leo’s decision to announce the procedure publicly during a weekly address contrasts with more limited disclosures by some predecessors. The operation will be performed under general anaesthesia. Oncologists not involved in his care said patients with early-stage nodules are often discharged after a few days and continue recovery at home.
The nodule was found during what the Vatican described as routine checks with no specific symptom prompting the examination. Leo thanked the crowd for their prayers and closeness. His agenda for the coming week includes audiences, though some may be adjusted. The Gemelli facility is a Catholic teaching hospital affiliated with the Sacred Heart University. Staff there have treated multiple popes over decades.
The announcement comes as Leo has begun to set priorities on conflicts, technology and other issues. His health disclosure provides the first concrete medical detail of his tenure. Whether the surgery and recovery alter the Latin America itinerary will depend on the exact timing of the operation and the post-operative course.
