Pope Leo XIV was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on the morning of 13 October 2026 for surgery to remove a lung nodule detected at an early stage. The 71-year-old American-born pontiff made the announcement himself during the Sunday Angelus in St Peter’s Square on 11 October, saying doctors found a circumscribed, well-localised nodule during recent routine examinations and recommended removal. He decided to follow their advice. The Vatican stated the expected recovery period is about one week.
This is the first major health event of Leo’s 17-month papacy. He was elected on 8 May 2025 after the death of Pope Francis. The nodule’s nature has not been disclosed; the Vatican has not said whether it is suspected to be malignant. Lung specialists note that nodules can result from infection, inflammation or scarring as well as cancer. If the lesion is malignant and removed early, the prognosis is generally excellent and surgery alone may suffice.
The procedure is expected to use established thoracic techniques, possibly including thoracoscopy in which the lung is temporarily collapsed, the nodule located by camera and the affected section removed. A chest drain remains until the lung re-expands. Risks are described as low for a patient in good overall condition. Leo has maintained an active lifestyle with no previously known serious health problems. Gemelli Hospital, which has a dedicated papal suite used by previous pontiffs, is performing the operation.
Leo said he still intends to carry out his planned 6–17 November trip to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru. The Vatican has not indicated any change to that itinerary. Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle is scheduled to lead Wednesday’s Mass in the pope’s absence. Audiences and other public activities have been adjusted through the recovery window.
The decision to announce the finding and surgery personally marks a contrast with past papal health disclosures. Leo controlled the message in a public setting rather than leaving it to later statements. Argentine bishops and other Catholic communities have called for prayers for a successful procedure and recovery. The operation occurs against the backdrop of Leo’s ongoing agenda on global conflicts, technology and church governance.
No further clinical details, biopsy results or imaging measurements have been released. The early detection and planned removal are the concrete facts available. Recovery will determine whether the November Latin America schedule proceeds unchanged.
