Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid foundation stones for projects valued at Rs 13,000 crore in Tamil Nadu on Sunday. The initiatives cover digital connectivity, industrial growth and trade. Five redeveloped railway stations—Ambasamudram, Palani, Namakkal, Paramakkudi and Vellore Cantonment—were opened under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, bringing the total upgraded stations in the state to 26.
The station works include improved passenger facilities, better platforms and modern amenities. The broader package also supports industrial and digital infrastructure intended to create jobs. Local leaders from the ruling party attended the events. Some opposition placards appeared at one gathering but did not disrupt the programme.
The timing coincides with ongoing political activity in the state and at the national level over electoral rolls. The railway upgrades are part of a national scheme that has already completed or started work at dozens of stations across India. Tamil Nadu now has more than two dozen stations under the programme.
Passengers at the five stations will see immediate changes in circulation, waiting areas and information systems. The industrial and digital components will take longer to show employment effects. No detailed breakdown of the Rs 13,000 crore by individual project has been released beyond the station names and the overall focus areas.
The inaugurations add to the list of infrastructure events the prime minister has conducted in southern states this year. The practical outcome for travellers is improved station infrastructure at the five named locations while the larger economic impact depends on the pace of the remaining industrial and connectivity works.
