Pistorius will order several hundred German soldiers to Lithuania after volunteers fall short

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has approved mandatory postings to Lithuania for a mid-three-figure number of soldiers, about 570 on figures circulating inside the Bundeswehr. The ministry said on Monday that volunteers have filled almost 80 percent of the posts in Panzerbrigade 45. The gaps are in logistics, information technology, armour maintenance and medical services. "Einsatzbereitschaft geht im Zweifel vor Freiwilligkeit," the ministry wrote: readiness comes before volunteering when the two conflict.

More than 2,500 soldiers have put their names forward since May. That is not enough to reach 4,800 troops and 200 civilians by the end of 2027, the date Berlin has set for a fully combat-ready brigade at Rūdninkai, south-west of Vilnius and about 20 kilometres from Belarus, and at Rukla near Kaunas. The unit was commissioned in April 2025. It will absorb existing formations, including Panzerbataillon 203 and Panzergrenadierbataillon 122, and new outfits still being raised. It is Germany's first permanent combat deployment abroad since the Second World War.

The geography is the reason. The Suwałki corridor between Kaliningrad and Belarus is about 60 kilometres wide and is the land link from Poland to the Baltic states. NATO planners treat it as the place a Russian move would try to cut. A German armoured brigade sitting on the Lithuanian side of that problem is the physical form of promises made after 2022. Pistorius said infrastructure, kit and people will be in place on time. The posting orders are how he intends to keep that sentence true.

Short tours, rotations and temporary duty are still on the table for some scarce trades. The ministry insists that volunteering remains the default. The new orders apply to the trades that did not show up. In a tight labour market those trades are the same ones civilian firms cannot fill. A signal officer or a tank mechanic who did not ask for Vilnius will now be told to go. Families, schools and housing in two Lithuanian garrisons become a personnel file rather than a recruitment brochure.

Lithuania asked for this brigade and signed a government agreement in 2024. Vilnius will treat the posting orders as proof that Berlin will not let the timeline slip. Opposition voices in Germany will treat them as a quiet return to assignment by command on the eastern flank. Both readings are available from the same press release. The number that settles the argument is whether the brigade is at full strength in December 2027, not whether every soldier in it raised a hand in 2026.

Pistorius has less than 16 months. Barracks and ranges at Rūdninkai and Rukla are still being built. Tanks and spare parts have to move. The 20 percent still missing are the people who keep those tanks running and talking. Ordering them east is a small administrative act with a long shadow. It says the eastern flank is no longer a volunteer project. It is a posting.
