WASHINGTON, 12 October 2026 — The U.S. Defense Department has raised the number of American service members killed in operations linked to the Iran conflict from 18 to 21. The count of wounded increased by 98 to 865. The update was posted on Friday without a separate public statement.
The figures cover personnel killed or injured in strikes, air-defence engagements and related support missions since the escalation earlier this year. The Pentagon has faced criticism from members of Congress for the pace and detail of its casualty releases. Earlier totals had stood at 18 dead and roughly 767 wounded.
The revision arrives while the Strait of Hormuz remains a point of friction. Iranian officials have said U.S. responses to Tehran’s conditions for reopening the waterway are insufficient. Separate Houthi attacks on Saudi airports have drawn statements from the White House about possible American participation in retaliatory strikes. No new U.S. ground deployments have been announced.
Military families and veterans’ groups have asked for clearer breakdowns by service branch, location and cause. The Department has not yet released those details for the additional three deaths or the 98 new wounded. Officials have said that operational security and next-of-kin notification requirements delay full public accounting.
For budget analysts the numbers feed into estimates of medical and personnel costs that will appear in supplemental requests. For commanders the higher wounded figure reflects both the intensity of recent air and missile exchanges and the survival rate among those injured. For the public the updated totals are the clearest official measure of the human cost of the current operations. Further revisions are expected as additional reports from the field are verified.
