Pakistan's Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir arrives in Tehran on August 24 at the head of an official delegation. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said the visit aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation and advance Pakistan's role in supporting regional peace and security.
Munir is scheduled to meet senior Iranian officials. The trip follows a telephone conversation on August 22 between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Munir on the latest regional developments.
Pakistan has acted as a mediator since the outbreak of hostilities between the United States and Iran on 28 February. It helped broker an interim memorandum of understanding in Islamabad in June that set a framework for ending the fighting. Hostilities have resumed in limited form, and Pakistan continues to press both sides toward dialogue.
The visit coincides with an expected American announcement of new sanctions that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has described as the toughest in history. Iran has warned neighbouring states against joining the economic pressure campaign, saying any country that does so will be treated as an enemy.
Islamabad has repeatedly called for diplomacy and said it is making all-out efforts through direct and indirect channels to bring Washington and Tehran back to the negotiating table. Bilateral trade between Pakistan and Iran remains modest, with both sides discussing targets to raise it toward $10 billion.
Munir's presence in Tehran supplies a high-level military channel at a moment when civilian diplomatic routes are constrained. The practical results will depend on whether the talks produce concrete steps that reduce the risk of further escalation in the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding waters.
