Evacuees from the Russian-occupied town of Oleshky in Ukraine's Kherson region arrived on Ukrainian-controlled territory on Saturday, 31 October 2026. The civilians travelled by bus and plane through Russian-held areas and Belarus before crossing the border in the Chernihiv region. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed their arrival and thanked first lady Melania Trump for her role in the mediation.
The local ceasefire in Oleshky and surrounding parts of the Kherson region began earlier in the week. White House statements and statements from both Ukrainian and Russian officials credited Melania Trump as an intermediary, with additional involvement from Pope Leo. The truce allowed humanitarian aid to enter the town and created a designated safe passageway for civilians who wished to leave. Residents could choose to travel to Ukrainian-held territory, to Russian-held territory, or to remain with replenished supplies.
Oleshky has been under continuous Russian occupation since early 2022. Pre-war population stood near 24,000. Roughly 40 percent left in the first months when routes were still open. By late 2026 an estimated 1,700 to 2,000 people, including about 50 children, remained. Access roads were heavily mined and subject to drone activity, making independent escape difficult. Residents described surviving on limited food, sometimes a cup of rice or buckwheat a day supplemented by wild plants. One woman who arrived on Saturday had lost about a third of her body weight.
Russian human rights commissioner Yana Lantratova said 25 buses and nine ambulances carried people out of the town on Friday. Ukrainian Human Rights Commissioner Dmytro Lubinets coordinated on the Ukrainian side. The convoys first moved through Crimea. Those heading to Ukraine were then flown to Homel in Belarus before continuing by road. Tearful reunions took place at the border crossing as families wrapped themselves in Ukrainian flags. Zelensky said all arrivals would receive needed assistance and hoped humanitarian access to Oleshky would remain open after the truce expires.
Both Moscow and Kyiv have publicly praised the first lady's involvement. Russian President Vladimir Putin and his spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted her earlier work on reuniting children separated by the conflict. Ukrainian officials, including negotiator David Arakhamia, described the operation as the result of a long process. Neither side wants to be seen as responsible for failure in a humanitarian action that occurs while U.S. midterm elections approach and while broader peace talks remain under discussion.
The ceasefire covered a stretch of the front that Ukrainian officials called the most extensive and durable local truce of the war so far. Demining work preceded the aid convoy; one Russian sapper and another person were killed during those operations. The truce was due to expire on Sunday night. Its limited geographic scope and short duration distinguish it from any wider settlement. The evacuation itself moved hundreds of people who had been cut off from regular supplies for months.
The operation supplies a concrete example of a mediated local pause that produced measurable civilian movement. It does not alter the broader military lines or resolve the larger territorial questions that separate the two sides. The arrival of the evacuees on Saturday closes the first phase of the corridor that opened under the Melania Trump-brokered arrangement.
