Residents of the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky in Ukraine's Kherson region arrived on Ukrainian-controlled territory in the Chernihiv oblast on Saturday, October 31, 2026, after a humanitarian evacuation conducted under a localized ceasefire.
President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the crossing. "As of now, Ukrainian citizens from Oleshky have crossed the Ukrainian border in the Chernihiv region," he said. "All of them will receive the assistance they need." He thanked Melania Trump for her mediation role. First Lady Melania Trump posted that the operation showed it is possible to raise humanity above war.
The ceasefire in the Oleshky sector began at 3:00 a.m. Kyiv time on Tuesday, October 27, and was scheduled to last until Sunday evening, November 1. It allowed de-mining teams to clear access routes around the municipal hospital. A convoy of 25 buses and specialized ambulances then moved civilians who chose to leave. Some travelled by bus and plane through Russian territory and Belarus before re-entering Ukraine.
Ukrainian authorities have not disclosed the exact number of evacuees. Melania Trump stated on Friday that the convoy could safely move more than 750 people. Relatives waited at the border with Ukrainian flags, aid tents, and supplies for pets. Some arrivals embraced family members after more than four years under occupation. Ukraine's ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets travelled into the occupied area to escort the group, the first high-profile Ukrainian official to do so openly since the full-scale invasion began.
Oleshky has been under Russian control since early in the war. Remaining residents faced shortages of food, medicine, and clean water. The estimated 2,000 people still in the city were offered the choice of Ukraine-held territory, Russian-held territory, or remaining with replenished supplies. Some chose routes that took them to Crimea or other Russian areas; others returned to Ukraine.
The operation required coordination between Ukrainian and Russian sides, with Melania Trump acting as intermediary. Zelensky also credited Ukrainian defence forces for securing the conditions. The truce is the most significant localized silence in the southern sector in years. It does not extend to other parts of the front.
For those who left, the immediate next steps include medical checks, temporary housing, and family reunification. Ukrainian authorities have said they will not reveal precise numbers or crossing points to protect those who stayed behind and to preserve options for future missions. Russian media showed some civilians arriving at accommodation sites in Crimea.
The successful extraction demonstrates that limited humanitarian corridors remain possible even after years of fighting. Whether similar arrangements can be repeated depends on continued willingness from both sides and on the security situation once the current silence ends on Sunday evening. For the people who crossed on Saturday, the immediate result is exit from a city that had been cut off from Ukrainian-controlled territory for more than 1,700 days.
