Brent crude futures fell more than 8 percent on 4 November 2026, settling near $94.62 a barrel, after Democrats took control of both chambers of the US Congress. West Texas Intermediate dropped about 8.3 percent to $88.12. Both benchmarks reached their lowest levels in two months.
Traders linked the move to expectations that Democratic majorities would constrain further military action against Iran. The conflict, which began with strikes on 28 February, had added a risk premium to oil because of concerns over the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant share of global seaborne crude moves.
President Trump acknowledged that the war had contributed to Republican losses by raising gasoline prices. Vice President JD Vance wrote that the war was the reason for the defeat. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said Democrats would work to end the conflict.
Gulf stock markets rose on the same day. Qatar's index gained more than 2 percent, Dubai more than 2 percent, and Saudi Arabia's TASI about 1.65 percent. US equity indices also advanced, with the Dow rising more than 1,000 points in one session as political uncertainty eased and lower oil prices supported consumer-facing stocks.
Energy company shares lagged. The drop in oil reduces near-term revenue for producers but eases pressure on inflation and household fuel costs in importing countries. Whether the decline holds depends on whether any formal steps toward de-escalation follow the election result.
Markets had priced in the possibility of renewed strikes after the midterms. The shift in congressional control removes some of that near-term risk, at least until the new Congress is seated in January.
