North Korea fired multiple ballistic missiles toward the sea on Monday, South Korean defence officials said. The launches originated from an area around Pyongyang and involved missiles of various types.
The tests form part of a continuing series of weapons demonstrations by North Korea this year. South Korean and US forces tracked the missiles. No immediate damage or casualties were reported in the region.
Pyongyang has accelerated missile and other weapons testing while engaging in limited diplomatic contacts. The launches come amid broader regional tensions that include the conflict involving Iran and Houthi forces in the Middle East and the ongoing war in Ukraine.
South Korean military statements described the missiles as being fired into the sea. Japanese officials also monitored the activity. North Korean state media had not immediately issued a detailed statement on the specific launches at the time of reporting.
The tests underscore North Korea’s continued development of delivery systems capable of reaching targets across the region. Previous launches this year have included shorter-range and longer-range systems. International sanctions remain in place, though enforcement has varied.
Regional governments have called for restraint. The United States and South Korea maintain joint defence postures and regularly conduct exercises that North Korea describes as provocative. No unusual troop movements were reported in connection with Monday’s launches.
