A brush fire that began around 11:30 a.m. on Friday, October 16, 2026, near Portico Del Norte in San Clemente spread rapidly under Santa Ana winds into San Juan Capistrano. By Saturday morning the Norte Fire had burned 570 acres and was 5 percent contained, according to the Orange County Fire Authority. At least six homes were destroyed and roughly 16,000 people were under evacuation orders at the peak.
The fire grew from about 10 acres to 50-70 acres within an hour. It burned homes on Via La Mirada in San Juan Capistrano. One firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion and another was hospitalized. Evacuation orders covered San Juan Zones 4, 5 and 10 and San Clemente Zones 12 and 13. Some orders were later lifted for parts of San Clemente and the Stallion Ridge area.
Orange County Fire Authority spokesman Greg Barta said crews attacked the fire overnight and worked to strengthen containment lines. Officials expected containment to increase substantially on Saturday even as winds of 10 to 15 mph with stronger gusts continued. County Supervisor Katrina Foley urged residents to follow evacuation orders because wind direction can change quickly.
Shelters opened at the Boys and Girls Club on Via Positiva in San Juan Capistrano, the San Juan Capistrano Community Center and the San Clemente Community Center. Animals were allowed at the Boys and Girls Club location. About 6,000 homes were under orders early Saturday.
The fire occurred during a period of red-flag warnings for high winds and dry conditions across Southern California. Firefighters worked through the night to extinguish hot spots and prevent further spread into residential areas. No civilian fatalities were reported.
Residents in the affected zones remain under varying levels of restriction while crews continue suppression. The incident shows how quickly Santa Ana-driven fires can move through dry brush into developed neighborhoods on the Orange County coast.
