Munich in 2028 and Barcelona in 2029 get the Champions League finals

UEFA confirmed on Tuesday that the 2028 Champions League final will be played at Munich Football Arena, the stadium still widely called the Allianz Arena, and that the 2029 final will be held at Camp Nou in Barcelona. The executive committee took the decision in Thessaloniki. Madrid’s Estadio Metropolitano already holds the 2027 final on 5 June.

Munich will stage the club competition’s last match for a third time. Chelsea beat Bayern on penalties there in 2012. Paris Saint-Germain won its first European Cup in the same bowl in 2025. The arena also hosted six matches at Euro 2024 and the 2025 Nations League final. Capacity is about 70,000 for a European final once the seating plan is tightened. The city was the only bidder for 2028.

Barcelona won 2029 against a late look at Wembley. Mundo Deportivo reported that the bid carried letters from the city council, the Catalan government, the Spanish federation and the national government. Camp Nou last held the final in 1999, when Manchester United scored twice in stoppage time to beat Bayern 2-1. The stadium also hosted the 1989 final. The 2029 date in Spanish coverage is Saturday 2 June. That puts the match one year before Spain co-hosts the 2030 World Cup with Portugal and Morocco.

The ground itself is still being rebuilt. Work that began in 2023 has kept the club in temporary homes for league fixtures. UEFA is betting that the project will be finished in time for a one-night crowd larger than a normal league night. If the bowl slips, the union would have to move the final on short notice. That risk is the price of putting the game back in a stadium that has been a building site for three seasons.

The same meeting filled the rest of the 2028 and 2029 calendar. The 2028 Europa League final goes to the National Arena in Bucharest. The Conference League final that year goes to Juventus Stadium in Turin. The women’s Champions League final will be at Parc Olympique Lyonnais. The Super Cup will be played at Astana Arena. For 2029, the Europa League final is assigned to the National Stadium in Belgrade, the Conference League final to Puskás Aréna in Budapest, and the women’s final to the National Stadium of Wales in Cardiff. The 2027 Super Cup had already been given to the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam.

Venue votes of this kind are about calendars and politics as much as grass. Munich offered a finished stadium and a city that has already run a World Cup, a Euro and two club finals. Barcelona offered a rebuilt monument and a World Cup year next door. Belgrade and Astana pick up the secondary finals that keep the union’s map wide. Cardiff gets the women’s showpiece in a ground that already knows rugby crowds of 70,000.

Clubs will now plan travel, tickets and hospitality against those dates. Broadcasters will lock production trucks. City governments will start the quieter work of hotel rooms and metro hours. The football itself is three years away. The allocation is the moment when a final stops being an open bid and becomes a date on a public calendar.
