The Bombay Milk Producers Association will lift the wholesale price of tabela buffalo milk in Mumbai by Rs 9 a litre from 1 September. The rate moves from Rs 93 to Rs 102. Association president Chandra Kumar Singh said the new price holds until 28 February 2027, when members will review it.
Households that buy straight from local farms and dairies could see retail near Rs 110 a litre. That is the figure several city reports used on Saturday. It is not a government-set MRP. It is the street price that follows a wholesale reset.
Why the jump is large
Singh called the increase the largest in recent history for this trade. Members voted for it unanimously, he said, because the old rate was no longer viable. Grain, tuvar chuni, chana chuni and corn have risen by as much as 25 percent. Oil cakes, grass and other fodder have moved with them. Cattle themselves cost more to replace and to keep.
Tabela milk is the loose buffalo milk that still reaches a large share of Mumbai kitchens by can and by morning delivery, outside the branded pouch system. It is a different market from cooperative lines. Gokul, Maharashtra's largest cooperative union, raised retail buffalo milk by Rs 2 a litre earlier this month, to Rs 78 in Mumbai and Pune, after lifting the price it pays farmers. Gokul cow milk and some full-cream lines were left unchanged in that round.
The two hikes stack for a household that uses both farm milk and pouched milk. They also land just before the festive stretch, when sweets, tea stalls and caterers raise their own orders.
Who absorbs it
Producers say they have been carrying feed inflation for months. Consumers will now carry the next increment. There is no city subsidy announced for loose milk. Municipal and state officials have not stepped in to cap the tabela rate. The association is a producer body, not a regulator. Once it posts Rs 102, the delivery man posts a number close to it.
For a family that takes two litres a day, Rs 9 wholesale is Rs 540 a month before the retail markup. At Rs 110 retail the extra is larger. Those rupees leave the food budget and do not return unless feed prices fall before the February review.
Mumbai's milk politics usually surface when cooperatives and the state negotiate procurement. This round is narrower and sharper. It is the private and semi-private buffalo trade resetting a six-month price in public, with a single number attached. Rs 102 is the wholesale floor from Tuesday. The review date is already on the calendar. Feed invoices will decide whether that date brings a cut, a hold, or another letter from the association.
