Wholesale buffalo milk from Mumbai cattle sheds rose Rs 9 a litre on 1 September, from Rs 93 to Rs 102. The Bombay Milk Producers Association, also referred to as the Mumbai Milk Producers' Welfare Association in some reports, said the rate holds until 28 February 2027.
Chairman C. K. Singh said retail prices in the city could move to Rs 115-125 a litre depending on the neighbourhood. Other accounts put direct farm-to-home retail nearer Rs 110, from about Rs 100. Either way the litre that sits in tea and sweets has crossed Rs 100 at the shed gate for the first time in this cycle.
The association called the increase the steepest in its 70-year record. The previous move was Rs 91 to Rs 93 in February. Members cited two cost lines. Milch animals themselves have become 60 to 70 percent more expensive to buy. Cattle feed items such as grains, tur chuni and chana chuni are up as much as 25 percent, along with oil cakes and other supplements.
A festive season bill
Demand for milk in Mumbai usually rises 35 to 40 percent during the festival and marriage months, when households and sweet shops cook in bulk. The hike lands on the first day of that stretch. Cooperative brand Gokul had already raised retail buffalo milk by Rs 2 to Rs 78 a litre in Mumbai and Pune after paying farmers more at procurement.
The same morning brought two other city increases. Mahanagar Gas raised CNG and piped cooking gas, pointing to shortages after attacks on LNG plants in the Gulf. Auto-rickshaw fares in the metropolitan region rose by Re 1 and black-and-yellow taxis by Rs 2. Households that buy shed milk, cook on PNG and ride an auto are paying all three at once.
What the Rs 102 line does not settle
Organised dairies and loose-milk vendors set their own retail. The association's number is a wholesale floor for a large share of Aarey and city-stable supply, not a government-notified maximum. If feed prices ease after harvest, the February 2027 end date can be brought forward. If they do not, the next conversation will start from Rs 102, not Rs 93.
For tea stalls and mithai shops the litre is an input, not a finished good. A Rs 9 wholesale move either shrinks the cup or raises the price of the cup. In a city that drinks milk all day, that is how a cattle-feed invoice becomes a consumer-price line before Navratri.
