Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Canada on 11 and 12 December 2026. The High Commission of India in Ottawa announced the dates on 16 October. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed the schedule while speaking to visitors at a restaurant in Calgary the previous day.
Carney said the visit will include Toronto and Ottawa. He added that officials would see whether the itinerary could be broadened. Modi is expected to meet Carney in Ottawa, meet Canadian business leaders and attend a gathering with the Indian diaspora in Toronto. He will then travel to Miami for the G20 Leaders' Summit.
The announcement followed a telephone conversation between the two leaders on 13 October. Modi described the call as warm and productive. Both sides agreed to build on positive momentum and work toward concrete outcomes in trade, energy, technology, security and people-to-people ties. Carney's office said the leaders reaffirmed their commitment to conclude negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement at the earliest opportunity.
The two governments aim to double bilateral trade by 2030. The fifth round of CEPA talks ended in Ottawa last week. Officials plan to review remaining issues in November while agreed text undergoes legal review. The visit will be Modi's first bilateral trip to Canada since April 2015, when Stephen Harper was prime minister.
Relations cooled after the 2023 killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada. Both sides have since increased engagement in finance, defence, security and artificial intelligence. The High Commission said the leaders agreed to work toward outcomes across the strategic partnership. Carney has described the relationship as exceptionally important on multiple levels.
Indian officials have said the CEPA talks are making progress. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal visited Canada earlier in the year to advance the negotiations. The December trip is intended to turn the recent improvement in ties into specific agreements on trade, energy and security.
Modi posted on X after the October call that India and Canada are contributing toward a more stable and prosperous world. The High Commission repeated that message when it announced the dates. Carney has said he looks forward to hosting the Indian prime minister.
The visit comes as both countries seek to expand cooperation beyond the trade agreement. Energy and technology appear on the agenda alongside security issues. Officials on both sides have said the December meetings will test whether the recent thaw can produce measurable results.
