Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 23-kilometre Pune Metro Line 3, known as the Pink Line, on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, through video conferencing. The corridor, built at a cost of over Rs 8,300 crore, connects the Hinjewadi IT hub to the District Court Metro station.
Modi also laid the foundation stone for four new metro corridors under Phase II, with a total investment of around Rs 21,800 crore for the combined projects. The Phase II corridors, estimated at around Rs 13,500 crore, comprise Lines 2A, 2B, 4 and 4A and will cover residential, commercial and IT hubs across the city.
The Pink Line will be operated entirely by women train operators, the first such initiative on the Pune system. Approximately 30 percent of its electricity requirements will be met through solar power. The line links older and newer parts of Pune and is expected to improve access to the major IT hub at Hinjewadi.
Addressing the ceremony, Modi said India’s operational metro network, which covered 248 kilometres before 2014, now covers 1,200 kilometres. He noted that the NDA government had set out in 2014 to improve ease of living and transportation for the urban middle class. He described Pune as a centre of innovation contributing to the vision of a developed India, citing its strengths in IT, automotive, pharmaceuticals, startups and manufacturing.
The Prime Minister recalled laying the foundation stone for the first phase of the Pune Metro a decade earlier. With the new line open, a major IT hub gains direct metro connectivity. Work on the additional Phase II corridors began the same day and will further strengthen links between different parts of the city.
The projects form part of a broader expansion of urban rail across India. The 1,200-kilometre national figure reflects completed operational sections as of the inauguration. Local officials expect the Pink Line to reduce road congestion on routes serving the Hinjewadi area and the older city centre.
The inauguration took place via video link from the Prime Minister’s side, with the formal event held in Pune. Officials highlighted the solar component and the all-women operating staff as distinctive features of the new line.
