Modi commissions the last 326 km of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor
Three Gujarat-Maharashtra sections costing more than Rs 20,700 crore close a 1,506-km line from JNPT to Dadri. With the Eastern corridor already open, the 2,843-km DFC network is complete. Officials say the corridors now move about 443 freight trains a day.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, 8 September, commissioned the last three sections of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor and declared India's 2,843-kilometre dedicated freight network complete. He spoke by video from Vadodara. Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis were at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority for the local event.
The three sections are New Sanand (North)-New Makarpura, New Umbergaon-New Saphale, and New Saphale-New JNPT. Together they run 326 route kilometres and cost more than Rs 20,700 crore. They close the 1,506-km Western DFC from JNPT in Navi Mumbai to Dadri in Uttar Pradesh. The 1,337-km Eastern DFC, from Ludhiana to Sonnagar, was already in service. Officials said the two corridors now carry about 443 freight trains a day.
Modi put the time saving in two comparisons. A truck run that takes 30 hours should, on suitable cargo, take 10 to 12 hours on the corridor. The time to cover 100 km on the Western DFC is about two and a half hours, against nearly six hours on mixed passenger-and-goods tracks. He said fuel, fare, time and emissions all fall when freight leaves the old main line.
Business Standard, citing operators, offered a colder number. Optimum cost savings on container cargo could reach about 25 percent. What operators actually pocket today is closer to 6-7 percent. That gap is the live commercial story. Steel, track and signalling are finished. Last-mile rules, terminal charges and the way Indian Railways still prices the old network are not.
The Western line is built for 25-tonne axle loads on track and 32.5 tonnes on bridges, trains up to 1,500 metres long, and double-stacked containers on flatcars under a 7,100-mm loading gauge. WAG-12 locomotives are meant to run above 100 km/h. Most of the Western corridor had been open since 2024. The missing piece was the last stretch onto JNPT. Trial runs on the electrified double line between JNPT and Vaitarna (New Saphale) took place on 31 March 2026.
Cargo expected on the western spine includes containers, fertiliser, grain, salt, coal, iron, steel and cement. The eastern spine still leans on coal and minerals from the east. Dadri is the junction. Once trains can run JNPT-Dadri-Ludhiana or JNPT-Dadri-Sonnagar without mixing with passenger rakes, the Gati Shakti claim becomes a timetable question rather than a construction one.
Modi used the podium to attack the opposition. He called Rahul Gandhi's student campaign an "echo of lies" and pictured critics as a grumpy uncle worrying about truck drivers. He said the UPA years left files pending and that work accelerated after 2014. The project itself is older than both talking points. It was proposed in the Vajpayee years, designed under later governments, and financed in large part with Japan International Cooperation Agency loans on the western side.
Container train operators now want the next set of changes: access rules, haulage rates, and terminals that can actually turn a 1,500-metre rake. Without those, a finished corridor is a fast road with a toll booth at each end. The 443 daily trains are the current proof of use. The 6-7 percent saving is the current proof that use is not yet the full design.
The last useful fact is geographic. Until this week, western port cargo still had to squeeze onto shared tracks to reach the already-open DFC. As of Tuesday night that squeeze is gone. Whether rates fall by a quarter, or stay in single digits, will be visible in shipping-line invoices before it is visible in speeches.
