Modi commissions the last 326 km of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor
Three sections costing more than Rs 20,700 crore now link Sanand, Makarpura, Umbergaon, Saphale and JNPT. He said 430 freight trains run daily and a double-stack load equals more than 250 trucks.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, 8 September, dedicated three sections of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor covering 326 route kilometres and more than Rs 20,700 crore. The stretches are New Sanand (North)–New Makarpura, New Umbergaon–New Saphale and New Saphale–New JNPT. With those openings, the government says the western corridor is operational across its full length and JNPT has a direct freight rail link to the industrial belt of Gujarat.
Modi also flagged freight services from New Sanand (North), New Makarpura, New Umbergaon and New JNPT, and a passenger train between Tanda Road and Vadodara. He dedicated the Jobat–Tanda Road line on the Chhota Udepur–Dhar project, which connects tribal blocks of Alirajpur to the national network. Foundation stones went down for three further railway works covering 329 km at more than Rs 9,700 crore: third and fourth lines between Vadodara and Ratlam, gauge conversion of Miyagam Karjan–Choranda–Malsar, and doubling of Vishwamitri–Dabhoi. Highway packages on NH-48 and NH-53 sat in the same Rs 35,000 crore bundle.
At the NaMo for Viksit Bharat event he said the 2,800 km eastern and western corridors have become the backbone of the country’s trade. Separation of freight and passenger tracks, he said, now lets more than 430 freight trains run each day and cuts cargo time from about 30 hours by road to 10-12 hours by rail. He cited a double-stack container train from JNPT to Vadodara as carrying the load of more than 250 trucks. Farmers, he added, would move fruit, vegetables and flowers faster. He also pointed to 50,000 modern coaches and nearly 2.5 lakh wagons added since 2014, and to the first C-295 military transport assembled in Vadodara.
The western corridor was conceived to pull export-import boxes off the congested Mumbai suburban and trunk lines. JNPT is the country’s busiest container port. A dedicated track from the port through south Gujarat to the north Gujarat junctions is the piece that makes the rest of the corridor useful for ships, not only for domestic bulk. Whether wagon availability, last-mile sidings and port gate systems match the new steel is the operational question the speeches do not answer. Throughput over the next two quarters will.
Modi later headed to Mumbai for the Global Fintech Fest and a separate public schedule. Two people were detained at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre, one of them carrying a licensed gun and claiming a PMO identity. Mumbai Police said the Crime Branch is investigating. That incident sat on the same day’s wire as the freight-corridor photographs and does not change the track kilometres commissioned in Gujarat.
Dedicated freight corridors have slipped dates for a decade. Tuesday’s claim of a fully open western line is therefore a date stamp, not a slogan. The test is simple and numerical: how many trains actually leave JNPT on the new alignment, how many hours they take to reach Sanand and northern junctions, and whether the 250-truck comparison survives a week of real consists. If those numbers hold, the Rs 20,700 crore in the last 326 km will show up in freight rates. If they do not, the corridor will remain a completed asset waiting for operations to catch up.
