Democratic Representative Haley Stevens endorsed Republican Mike Rogers for Michigan’s U.S. Senate seat on 1 November 2026, two days before voters cast ballots. Stevens, who lost the Democratic primary to Abdul El-Sayed in August, appeared with Rogers at Perfecting Church in Detroit and then posted a video on social media.
In the video she said El-Sayed had told her she was no longer welcome in his campaign and that she should stay away. She added that she was therefore endorsing Rogers. Stevens also said she does not stand with left-wing streamer Hasan Piker, who had appeared with El-Sayed earlier in the cycle. She stated she remains a Democrat and believes her party can still win a Senate majority.
The endorsement followed weeks of tension. Stevens had demanded that El-Sayed condemn an outside advertisement linking U.S. military aid to Israel with rising grocery prices, which she called antisemitic. El-Sayed rejected the ad’s content. Democratic leaders including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and DNC Chair Ken Martin called the endorsement a betrayal. Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel said Stevens had abandoned the issues she claims to care about by campaigning with a candidate who supports a national abortion ban and Trump’s agenda.
Rogers said he was honoured by the support and that the two had spoken by phone that morning. The race is one of the closest Senate contests of the midterms. Control of the chamber could hinge on the outcome. Stevens had been heavily backed by the Senate Democrats’ campaign arm in the primary. Her late switch removes a potential unifying voice and supplies Rogers with a high-profile Democratic face in the final hours of campaigning.
El-Sayed told reporters he does not think about Stevens and that the primary is over. No polling has yet measured the effect of the endorsement on undecided voters in the Detroit area or statewide.
