First Lady Melania Trump hosted officials from Russia and Ukraine at the White House on November 5 to recognize the six-day localized ceasefire in Oleshky that she helped arrange. The pause, the longest of its kind since the war began in 2022, permitted humanitarian deliveries and civilian evacuations from the Russian-occupied city.
Oleshky, across the Dnipro River from Kherson, has seen its population fall from roughly 24,000 before the war to between 1,700 and 2,000 remaining residents, most of them elderly, plus about 50 children. Residents have faced limited electricity, mined roads and regular attacks. The White House described the city as on the brink of disaster without medicine, food and clean water.
Melania Trump stated that she and a representative worked directly with Russian and Ukrainian leadership to set the terms. Non-military civilian teams from both sides visited homes to assess needs and coordinate transport for those choosing to leave, either to Russia or to Ukrainian-controlled territory. The ceasefire began on October 29 after an initial target date was adjusted by two days. It was later extended and expanded slightly in the Kherson region.
Ukrainian Human Rights Commissioner Dmytro Lubinets and his Russian counterpart Yana Lantratova signed documentation of the agreement. Lubinets confirmed Ukraine honored the commitments. Russian and Ukrainian forces halted fire in the designated area at the agreed hour. An American media organization accompanied the teams to document the operation.
At the White House event, Melania Trump said the modest beginning in Oleshky should be used to find common ground through concern for innocent people and to create something more enduring than a temporary ceasefire. She called Oleshky a spark capable of illuminating the best in humanity. Senior adviser Marc Beckman described the meeting as an extraordinary moment.
The localized arrangement stands apart from broader efforts to end the full war. Fighting has continued elsewhere, including strikes on energy infrastructure. President Trump credited his wife's initiative when asked about the deal. The first lady has also worked for more than a year on the return of Ukrainian children from Russia.
The White House called the effort an unprecedented diplomatic initiative for a first lady. Both sides confirmed the parameters allowed aid entry and safe passage. Residents who evacuated received coordinated support to their preferred destination. The remaining population consists primarily of elderly people requiring medical attention.
The November 5 gathering provided an opportunity to review the operation's results and discuss continued humanitarian coordination. Hundreds of residents were evacuated during the window. The pause did not alter the overall front lines or the status of the occupied territory.
Melania Trump has maintained a lower public profile on the war compared with other administration figures. The Oleshky arrangement marks the first publicly acknowledged instance in which she served as the exclusive intermediary for a ceasefire agreement between the two governments. Further localized measures have not been announced.
