A magnitude 4.1 earthquake struck an area 40 kilometres east-northeast of Shimla in Himachal Pradesh at 4:36 a.m. IST on October 17, according to the National Centre for Seismology. The tremor was felt in parts of the city and surrounding hills. No reports of damage or casualties have been received.
The National Centre for Seismology, which operates under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, placed the epicentre roughly 40 km from Shimla. Depth and precise coordinates have not been released in the initial bulletin. Earthquakes of this magnitude in the Himalayan foothills are common and rarely cause structural damage when the epicentre is at moderate depth and the built environment is not already compromised.
Shimla sits in seismic zone IV under India’s zoning map. Residents in the region are accustomed to occasional light shaking. Local authorities have not issued any special advisories beyond the standard recommendation to check for minor cracks in older buildings. The event follows the normal pattern of small-to-moderate seismicity along the Main Boundary Thrust and related faults in the western Himalaya.
No aftershocks above magnitude 3.0 were reported in the hours immediately after the main shock. The National Centre for Seismology continues routine monitoring. The absence of reported damage indicates that the ground motion remained below the threshold for widespread structural effect in the affected area.
