A magnitude 4.1 earthquake struck Shimla district in Himachal Pradesh at 4:36 a.m. IST on Saturday. The National Centre for Seismology recorded the epicentre at a depth of 10 kilometres, roughly 40 kilometres east-northeast of Shimla. Tremors were felt for a few seconds in the Rampur area, about 130 kilometres from the state capital. Residents in some localities stepped outside.
The State Disaster Management Authority said no loss of life or property had been reported. Local accounts noted minor cracks and fallen tiles at a hospital in the Rampur area, but officials have not confirmed structural damage. Himachal Pradesh has recorded 67 earthquakes over the past three years through early August, with private-property losses listed at roughly 7.05 lakh rupees. Mild tremors were also felt in Shimla on 26 August.
The hill state lies in a seismically active zone of the Himalayas. Frequent moderate events are common, yet each one prompts residents and officials to reassess preparedness. The early-morning timing meant most people were indoors; the short duration limited any wider disruption. No aftershocks have been reported, and the state has not raised its alert level.
Authorities have not issued new public-safety instructions beyond the standard advice to follow official channels. The event adds to the year's tally of Himalayan seismicity without altering the broader risk picture for the region.
