A landfill collapse in the Dar-es-salam neighbourhood of Conakry, Guinea, killed at least 30 people and seriously injured six early on Sunday, August 23, 2026.
Heavy rain caused a mound of waste to give way at around 2 a.m., burying tents and shacks built beside the site and destroying several homes. Government statements confirmed the death toll and the circumstances.
Rescue teams continued searching for victims. The incident highlights risks in informal settlements near waste sites in rapidly growing cities, where heavy seasonal rains increase the chance of structural failure.
Similar collapses have occurred in other African cities under comparable conditions. Authorities have not yet released a full investigation timeline.
