Kimi Antonelli finished third at the Mexico City Grand Prix on November 1 and became Formula One's youngest world champion. The 20-year-old Mercedes driver reached 20 years and 68 days, surpassing Sebastian Vettel's previous record of 23 years and 134 days set in 2010.
He is the first Italian to win the drivers' title since Alberto Ascari in 1953. Antonelli started the race fourth and needed only to finish ninth to clinch the championship with four rounds remaining. His lead stood at an unassailable 119 points after the race.
Max Verstappen won the 71-lap event for Red Bull. Lewis Hamilton took second for Ferrari after starting from pole. The race featured two safety cars, multiple crashes, and a 33-minute red-flag stop with 25 laps left. Antonelli held position through the disruptions and crossed the line 4 seconds behind Verstappen.
On the team radio his voice cracked. He told race engineer Peter Bonnington, "We did it. We did it." Bonnington replied, "Get in there, Kimi! Champion of the world!" Antonelli later said he was speechless and trying to process the result. He credited Mercedes and his family. Verstappen and Hamilton lifted him onto their shoulders on the podium.
Antonelli arrived in the 2026 season as a teenager with no Formula One wins. He had struggled in his 2025 debut year. Mercedes chief Toto Wolff recalled that some sponsors left because they questioned the young driver's readiness. Antonelli responded with nine victories and seven poles in 19 races. He won five consecutive grands prix earlier in the year in China, Japan, Miami, Canada and Monaco. At Monza he recovered from 19th to first, the first Italian win at that circuit since 1966.
The Mexico City circuit sits at 2,200 metres altitude. Thin air reduces engine power and increases braking demands. Antonelli managed the conditions while dealing with illness and nerves, according to team reports. He finished ahead of teammate George Russell, who could no longer catch him in the standings.
Italy celebrated the result. Formula One CEO Stefano Domenicali said the country had waited 73 years for this moment. Antonelli will receive the official trophy at the FIA gala in Shanghai in December. Mercedes ends a six-year wait for a drivers' champion since Hamilton's 2020 title.
The remaining four races will decide the constructors' championship and the final order among the other drivers. Antonelli's performance has already shifted the competitive balance. Younger drivers now enter the sport with a clearer path to rapid success when teams provide early testing and support. His nine wins in one season place him among the most dominant single-year campaigns in recent memory.
The Mexico City result closes one chapter and opens another. Antonelli now races as defending champion. Opponents must adjust strategies to challenge a driver who has already demonstrated consistency across varied circuits and weather conditions. The numbers are clear: nine wins, an unassailable points margin, and a record that stood for 16 years broken by more than three years.
