Kimi Antonelli finished third in the Mexico City Grand Prix on 1 November 2026 and secured the Formula One World Championship at the age of 20 years and 68 days. He is the youngest driver ever to win the title. Sebastian Vettel held the previous record at 23 years and 134 days in 2010. Antonelli is also the first Italian champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953.
He needed only a ninth-place finish or better in Mexico to make the championship mathematically secure with four races remaining. He took third behind race winner Max Verstappen of Red Bull and Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari. His points lead became unassailable at 119 points. Teammate George Russell and Hamilton could no longer catch him.
The race at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez featured two safety cars, multiple crashes, and a red-flag stoppage lasting roughly 33 minutes with 25 laps remaining. Hamilton started from pole. He finished second after contact with his Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc. Verstappen took the win for the sixth time at the circuit. Antonelli crossed the line, and his race engineer Peter Bonnington told him over the radio that he was world champion. Antonelli's voice cracked as he replied, "We did it, we did it."
He had arrived in Mexico ill after the previous race but said on Sunday that he felt in his best physical shape. He finished the season with nine race wins. Mercedes took its first drivers' championship since Hamilton's seventh title in 2020. Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali said Italy had waited 73 years for the moment and that Antonelli's name now joins the legends of the sport.
Antonelli's path to the title was not smooth. After a difficult debut season in 2025, many observers questioned whether he belonged in Formula One. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff later recalled that sponsors left the team over the decision to run him. In 2026 he delivered consistent results, including a recovery from 19th to first at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, the first Italian win there since 1966. He also took the youngest pole position in China and led the championship early in the season.
The championship was decided on a high-altitude circuit where engine performance and tyre management matter. Antonelli managed the race without unnecessary risk once the mathematics of the title became clear. He thanked his family and the Mercedes team after the race. "I would not be here without Mercedes and my family," he said. "I'm speechless just trying to process this. It has been an incredible season."
The result ends a long wait for Italian fans. Ascari won consecutive titles in 1952 and 1953 for Ferrari. No Italian driver has claimed the crown since. Antonelli's age also resets expectations for how quickly a driver can move from junior categories into title contention. He joined Mercedes in 2025 after a rapid rise through Formula 2 and earlier series. The team gave him extensive testing in recent cars before his debut, an approach that paid off in his second season.
With four races left, Antonelli can still add to his win tally. The championship itself is finished. Mercedes now holds both the drivers' and, depending on remaining results, potentially the constructors' title. Rivals including McLaren team principal Andrea Stella, an Italian, publicly welcomed the achievement. The Mexico City result also confirmed that a driver can dominate a season without winning every race. Antonelli's nine wins came alongside strong consistency in the remaining events.
The timing of the title has practical consequences for the remaining calendar. Teams and drivers can shift focus toward 2027 car development while still competing for race wins and constructors' points. For Mercedes, the result validates the decision to retain Antonelli through a difficult first year. For the sport, it supplies a new benchmark for youth and a reminder that Italian success at the highest level had been missing for more than seven decades.
Antonelli's championship also arrives at a moment when Formula One continues to expand its global calendar. The Mexico City event, held at high altitude, tested both cars and drivers. His ability to finish third under those conditions, while knowing the title was within reach, showed the maturity that had been questioned only a year earlier. The radio message from Bonnington, and Antonelli's immediate emotional response, became the public face of the achievement.
