Kimi Antonelli crossed the line third in the Mexico City Grand Prix on 1 November and became Formula 1’s youngest world champion. The Mercedes driver is 20 years and 68 days old. Sebastian Vettel held the previous record at 23 years and 134 days when he won his first title in 2010.
Antonelli needed only to finish ninth or better. He placed third behind race winner Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton. His lead in the standings became unassailable at 119 points with four races still remaining. He is also the first Italian champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953.
The race at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez featured two safety cars, multiple incidents and a red-flag stoppage of roughly 33 to 45 minutes. Hamilton started from pole. Verstappen took the win, his sixth in Mexico City. Antonelli finished 3.207 seconds behind Hamilton.
On the team radio Antonelli said “We did it, we did it.” Race engineer Peter Bonnington told him it was “a pleasure to be on the journey with you, but it’s just the first chapter.” After the race Antonelli thanked his family and the team. He had felt ill earlier in the weekend yet said he was in good physical shape by Sunday.
Antonelli has nine race wins in the 2026 season so far and 16 podium finishes. He is in only his second year in Formula 1. His debut season in 2025 was difficult; Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff later recalled that some sponsors left because they questioned the young driver’s readiness. This year he recovered from 19th to win the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, the first Italian driver to win there since 1966.
Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali said Italy had waited 73 years for this moment. Antonelli joins the list of Italian champions and becomes the youngest to do so. Mercedes last had a drivers’ champion in 2020 with Hamilton.
The remaining races will decide the final order behind Antonelli. Teammate George Russell and Ferrari’s Hamilton cannot catch him. The title is settled. Antonelli will start the next race as world champion.
His path from junior categories through a testing programme with Mercedes cars to a title in his second season is now on record. The Mexico result closes the mathematical race and opens the question of how the rest of the field responds over the final four events.
