Kimi Antonelli finished third in the Mexico City Grand Prix on November 1, 2026, and became Formula 1’s youngest world champion at the age of 20 years and 68 days. Max Verstappen won the race for Red Bull. Lewis Hamilton took second for Ferrari. Antonelli needed only a ninth-place finish to seal the title with four races remaining. He delivered a podium instead.
The previous record belonged to Sebastian Vettel, who won his first title at 23 years and 134 days in 2010. Antonelli is also the first Italian drivers’ champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953. Mercedes claimed its first drivers’ title since Hamilton’s in 2020 and its tenth overall. Antonelli’s points lead became unassailable at 119 points.
The 71-lap race at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez featured two safety cars and a red-flag stoppage after a heavy crash involving Valtteri Bottas. Hamilton started from pole. He and teammate Charles Leclerc clashed early, which cost Ferrari a potential win and drew a five-second penalty for Leclerc. Verstappen moved forward and took the lead after the first round of pit stops. He held off Hamilton by 0.799 seconds at the flag. Antonelli crossed 4.006 seconds behind Verstappen.
On the slowing-down lap Antonelli’s voice cracked over the radio. He said, “Thank you so much. We did it. We did it.” Race engineer Peter Bonnington told him, “Get in there, Kimi. Champion of the world.” Later Antonelli told the crowd he was speechless and trying to process what had happened. His parents and sister were at the track. The team lifted him on the podium between Verstappen and Hamilton.
Antonelli, born in Bologna, is in only his second full season in Formula 1. He won the Italian Grand Prix at Monza earlier in the year with a recovery drive from 19th to first, the first Italian victory at the Temple of Speed since 1966. That result and consistent scoring through the season built the margin he needed in Mexico. He finished the Mexican race from fourth on the grid without major incident despite the interruptions around him.
Verstappen recorded his sixth victory at the Mexico City circuit. Hamilton ended a long wait for a pole the day before but left frustrated after the contact with Leclerc. The race weekend drew more than 400,000 spectators across three days. Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali noted that Italy had waited 73 years for this moment.
The result closes the championship fight with four rounds left. Antonelli’s closest pre-race challengers, teammate George Russell and Hamilton, can no longer catch him. The title marks a generational shift: a driver who was four years old when Vettel first became champion has now taken the record himself. Mercedes ends a six-year drought in the drivers’ standings. The remaining races will decide the constructors’ title and individual race wins, but the drivers’ championship is settled.
