Kimi Antonelli crossed the line in third place at the Mexico City Grand Prix on 1 November 2026 and immediately became Formula 1's youngest world champion. The Mercedes driver, born 25 August 2006, finished the race at 20 years and 68 days old. Sebastian Vettel held the previous record at 23 years and 134 days in 2010.
Max Verstappen won the race for Red Bull. Lewis Hamilton finished second for Ferrari after starting from pole. Antonelli needed only to finish ninth or better to make his lead unassailable. He crossed the line 3.207 seconds behind Hamilton. His points lead stood at 119 with four rounds still to run.
The race itself contained the usual high-altitude complications of the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. Two safety cars and a red-flag stoppage interrupted the 71 laps. Valtteri Bottas crashed heavily in his Cadillac, producing a 33-minute halt with 25 laps remaining. Hamilton and Charles Leclerc clashed early. Verstappen managed the restarts cleanly and took his sixth Mexico City victory.
Antonelli's radio message after the flag was short. "We did it, we did it," he said, voice cracking. On the podium Verstappen and Hamilton lifted him. Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali noted that Italy had waited 73 years since Alberto Ascari's 1953 title. Mercedes claimed its first drivers' championship since Hamilton's seventh in 2020.
Antonelli's path to the title was not linear. His 2025 debut season produced limited results and open questions about readiness. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff later recalled sponsors questioning the decision to place a teenager in a top seat. In 2026 the Italian won nine races, took seven poles and scored 19 podiums. One of those wins came at Monza, where he recovered from 19th to first and became the first Italian winner there since 1966.
The remaining calendar still contains four races. Antonelli's advantage removes any mathematical threat from teammate George Russell or Hamilton. Constructors' points remain live, but the drivers' crown is settled. The result also closes a chapter in which the sport's youngest drivers have steadily lowered the age barrier for major titles.
Antonelli thanked his family and the Mercedes team after the race. He described the weekend as tense because of illness earlier in the week, then said he felt in his best physical shape by Sunday. The podium photograph of three world champions together circulated immediately after the flag.
