Kejriwal and Sardesai name a Goa First ticket for 2027

Arvind Kejriwal and Vijai Sardesai stood together in Panaji on Sunday and put a name on a pact that had been moving for weeks. The Aam Aadmi Party and the Goa Forward Party will contest the 2027 Goa assembly election as Goa First. Kejriwal called it a non-BJP, non-Congress choice. Sardesai said the present government was built from defectors and that the new front would give voters a different roster.

The numbers in the current 40-seat house are small. AAP has Venzy Viegas from Benaulim and Cruz Silva from Velim, both in the south. GFP has Sardesai, a former deputy chief minister and now the party's only MLA. Together they hold three votes. Kejriwal still said Goa First would form the next government on its own. He said the people wanted a change and that the BJP would not keep a majority.

The timing is the insult to Congress. GFP fought with Congress in 2022. This summer the state Congress president, Girish Chodankar, said he had opened talks with AAP and the Revolutionary Goans Party and was waiting for GFP to lift a freeze. Sardesai did not lift it. He said wholesale defection from Congress benches into the BJP cabinet was the question that had gone unanswered. On Tuesday, 8 September, AAP state president Valmiki Naik had already called talks with GFP advanced. Five days later the freeze with Congress was still in force and the rival pact was public.

Posters had gone up before Kejriwal landed on Saturday. They carried both party marks and the line that Congress and BJP had cheated Goa twice. Atishi, Delhi's leader of the opposition and AAP's Goa desk in-charge, sat with the two principals. Kejriwal said the partners were equals. He also said AAP had learned a lesson after seven of its Rajya Sabha MPs moved to the BJP and that candidate choice for the Upper House would be tighter.

Goa goes to the polls before March 2027. The BJP government under Pramod Sawant has held the state through a string of floor crossings that Sardesai now treats as the campaign's central fact. Kejriwal used the same point from the other direction. He said a cabinet full of former Congress men could not honestly be called a BJP government or a Congress government. The line is built for a three-way frame in a 40-seat house, where a third list can matter if the two larger parties split the coastal and temple belts.

What the pact does not yet settle is seats. Three sitting MLAs do not draw a map for 40. Revolutionary Goans, who hold their own pocket, were not on the Sunday stage. Congress was not invited. Naik had said as recently as 8 September that AAP was still open to a wider anti-BJP front. Sunday's branding makes that harder. Once a name is printed, adding Congress looks like a climb-down to the voters the posters already accused of being cheated.

Sardesai's public case for AAP is service delivery. He said education and health in Goa need a hard reset and that AAP's record in the states it has run is the common ground. That is a state argument, not a national one. It also leaves the defection question hanging over Congress rather than over AAP, even after AAP's own Rajya Sabha losses. Kejriwal tried to close that gap by announcing caution. The electorate will test both claims when the lists come out.

For now the fact is simpler. Two opposition brands that do not trust Congress have decided they trust each other enough to share a name. The 2027 arithmetic in a 40-seat house will decide whether Goa First is a government in waiting or a three-MLA press conference with better posters.
