Kazakhstan Holds Legislative Election Under New Constitution; Ädilet Secures Large Majority

Kazakhstanis voted on Sunday to elect 145 members to the first convocation of the unicameral Kurultai under the country’s new constitution.

The Central Election Commission announced preliminary results on Monday showing Ädilet secured 71 percent of the vote. Contesting parties needed at least five percent of the vote to gain proportional representation.

The election follows the passage of the new constitution on 15 March. The change established the Kurultai as the single chamber of parliament.
