John Galliano and the Met cancel the 2027 Costume Institute show
The designer said an exhibition honouring his work would be painful for some. The Met Gala theme goes with the show. Next year's gala would have fallen on Yom HaShoah. Anna Wintour called the withdrawal courageous. The museum has no replacement yet.

John Galliano said on Monday, 31 August, that the planned Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibition of his work will not go ahead. The Met agreed. The spring 2027 Costume Institute show, announced only weeks earlier under the working title John Galliano: Horizons, is off. So is the Met Gala theme that would have travelled with it. Museum director Max Hollein said the two sides had reached the decision together. Anna Wintour, a Met trustee and Vogue's global editorial director, called Galliano's step courageous.
Galliano, 65, wrote that he remains fully accountable for the pain caused by his past words, particularly to Jewish and Asian communities, and that he remains deeply sorry. He said meaningful atonement is not achieved through an exhibition, institutional recognition or a single public gesture. He said he did not want the debate around him to put the Met in a difficult position or to distract from the Costume Institute's work. He added that he recognised an exhibition honouring his work would be painful for some.
The 2011 conviction and the calendar
Galliano was fired from Dior in 2011 after videos showed him at a Paris café saying he loved Hitler and directing antisemitic abuse at other patrons. A French court found him guilty of public insults based on origin, religion, race or ethnicity. His lawyer at the time blamed work-related stress and addictions. He later rebuilt a career at Maison Margiela and became the subject of the 2023 documentary High & Low.
The 2027 Met Gala is scheduled for the first Monday in May. That date next year coincides with Yom HaShoah, the day set aside for Holocaust remembrance. Donors, elected officials and Jewish leaders had already questioned the Met's choice on that ground. The calendar made a fashion-world argument into a civic one.
What the honour would have been
A living designer rarely gets a solo Costume Institute exhibition. Galliano would have been the third. Wintour had praised him in the documentary as one of the great designers. The museum's announcement in August assumed that distance from 2011, the documentary, and years of quiet work at Margiela had changed the terms. The reaction in the last week of August said they had not.
The Met now has no spring 2027 Costume Institute show and no 2027 gala theme. A replacement will be announced later. That is not a small hole. The gala finances the institute. The theme sells tickets, sponsorship and magazine pages. A late swap is possible. It will be hurried.
What the statement does and does not do
Galliano's text accepts the harm and refuses the show as a form of repayment. It does not withdraw the work. It does not announce a new public project with Jewish or Asian organisations. Wintour's word, courageous, is the fashion establishment closing ranks around a retreat. Hollein's word, jointly, is the museum declining to fire a collaborator in public.
The practical consequence is on Fifth Avenue in May 2027. The longer consequence is the test the Met set for itself when it booked a convicted antisemite for a Holocaust-remembrance Monday and then watched the booking collapse in four weeks.
