Manoj Jarange Patil drank water offered by BJP legislator Prasad Lad at Antarwali Sarati in Jalna district on 2 September, then told the crowd that the Maratha reservation fast was not over.
The activist had begun an indefinite hunger strike on 29 August. By the fifth day his blood sugar had dropped. A medical team camped at the site asked him to take intravenous fluids. He refused until Lad made an appeal in person. After the sip of water he accepted an IV drip. He also said, on camera, that he would not withdraw the strike until the demands were implemented and a government resolution was in his hand.
The demands that survived the glass of water
Jarange wants reservation for Marathas tied to Kunbi certificates issued from gazette records, including the old Hyderabad gazette. He wants certificates restored that, he says, ministers Sanjay Shirsat and Chandrashekhar Bawankule cancelled. He has set 12 September as a date for widening the protest toward Mumbai if the government does not move.
He said he had, for the first time, placed some trust in Lad and in minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, then accused Vikhe Patil of lying. He described the reservation file as trapped in a credit war among the chief minister and the deputy chief ministers. Those sentences matter more than the photograph of the glass. They show he is bargaining with named people inside the ruling alliance, not only with a slogan.
Jalna Collector Ashima Mittal had already visited the site on the night of 1 September to ask him to stop. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has treated the 12 September Mumbai threat as the next decision point. The water-and-drip sequence lets the state say the immediate medical risk has been reduced without giving Jarange the GR he wants.
Why a sip is not a settlement
Maharashtra has lived through several rounds of Maratha reservation law, court remand, and street pressure. Kunbi certificates are the current instrument because they offer a path into the Other Backward Classes list without a fresh statute that the courts have already struck. Bulk issue from old gazette entries is the demand that frightens other OBC groups, who see their share diluted, and that attracts Maratha voters who want a paper they can use in jobs and education.
Jarange's method is personal collapse as a clock. Five days without food produced a collector's visit, a legislator's glass, and a drip. It did not produce the certificates. He said his tongue stuck to the roof of his mouth if he spoke too long. That is the physical fact the government now has to weigh against the political cost of a GR.
The next public test is written on his own calendar. If no resolution appears before 12 September, he has already said the protest moves toward Mumbai. The water on Wednesday only keeps him alive for that date.
