Jaishankar to speak at the UN General Assembly on 26 September
School-assembly and diplomatic round-ups on 6 September listed India's external affairs minister for the annual high-level week. The date sits two weeks after planned US-China talks on AI safety and days after a General Assembly vote on map projections that India supported.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is listed to address the United Nations General Assembly's annual high-level debate on 26 September. Indian briefings circulating on 6 September put the date on the public calendar without releasing the text of the speech. The slot is the standard ministerial appearance in New York during leaders' week, not a special session.
The timing is crowded. The Assembly on 5 September adopted a Togo-sponsored resolution, backed by the African Union, that asks the UN system to correct map projections that shrink Africa. The vote was 164 to 1. The United States voted no. Six states abstained. India voted yes and said the text supports equal-area projections in general, not one named projection. That vote will still be on the floor when Jaishankar arrives.
Washington and Beijing are also due to hold a dedicated discussion on AI safety risks in mid-September. Those talks are bilateral. They will sit in the same news cycle as the New York speeches. India has spent two years arguing that AI rules should not be written only by the states that train the largest models. Jaishankar has made that point in earlier multilateral meetings. Whether he repeats it on 26 September is the question worth watching in the speech, not the fact of the appearance.
The rest of the high-level week will be dominated by the wars that already fill the chamber: Ukraine, after the Witkoff-Kushner shuttle through Moscow and Kyiv; the Iran-US tanker strikes of 5 September; and the fighting in southern Lebanon and Yemen. India has votes and lines on each of those files. The minister's New York text usually weaves them into a single claim about the Charter, the South, and strategic autonomy. The 26 September draft will be written against a week in which US forces sank an Iranian tanker in the Gulf of Oman and Russia paused strikes on Kyiv for three days only.
For the ministry the practical work is older and smaller: slot times, bilateral pull-asides, and which leaders will be in town on the 26th. Those meetings rarely appear in the speech and often decide more than the speech does.
Readers should treat the date as firm and the content as unreleased. Anything quoted as the speech before 26 September is a guess. The useful preparation is the vote record from this weekend and the list of wars that will still be open when he reaches the rostrum.
