The Sensex rose 330.92 points, or 0.43 percent, to 77,264.51 on Friday, 28 August. The Nifty 50 added 84.80 points, or 0.35 percent, to 24,175.65. Information-technology shares did the lifting. TCS gained 4.09 percent, Infosys 3.34 percent, Tech Mahindra 3.18 percent and HCL Technologies 2.68 percent. ICICI Bank fell 1.30 percent, UltraTech Cement 1.18 percent, Asian Paints 1.06 percent and ITC 0.52 percent.
The open had already pointed that way. The Nifty started 40 points higher at 24,131. The Sensex opened 192 points higher at 77,125.69. Tech Mahindra, TCS, Infosys, HCLTech and Wipro were the top five Nifty gainers in early trade. Asian markets were mixed. U.S. futures were flat. The domestic session did not need a strong global lead once the IT basket moved.
The listing of the day
Tempsens Instruments (India) debuted far above its issue price. The stock listed at ₹634 on the NSE, a premium of 111.33 percent. That print is the cleanest single data point from Friday’s cash market. It says the subscription book for a specialist manufacturer still clears at more than double the offer price on listing day, even in a week when index gains were modest and bank names were offered.
Index breadth behind the headline was narrow. A 331-point Sensex rise driven by four IT names is a sector bounce, not a risk-on tape. Private banks and a cement heavyweight giving up a percent each kept the Nifty’s advance smaller than the Sensex’s in percentage terms only by a hair, but the sector split is the story a desk will take into Monday.
What the move does not settle
IT outperformance on a Friday in late August can be positioning into month-end, a bounce after a weak patch, or a response to U.S. rate-path chatter after Jackson Hole. The session data alone do not pick a winner among those readings. What they do show is that buyers were willing to pay up for the large-cap software names while selling a high-quality lender and a pair of consumer-cyclical heavyweights.
Gold on the domestic futures board was quoted weaker in morning reference prints around ₹1,59,001, with silver firmer. Crude was higher on the same morning board. Those sidelines did not dictate the equity close. The close was an IT tape.
For the next session the questions are mechanical. Does TCS hold the 4 percent gain in cash, or does it give back half in the first hour? Does Tempsens trade above the ₹634 list price once the listing premium is digested? Does ICICI Bank stop going down? Friday answered only the first half of each question. It put 77,264 on the Sensex and 24,175 on the Nifty, with software in the lead and a thermometer-and-sensor maker listing at more than twice the offer price.
