Israeli strikes killed at least eight Palestinians in the Gaza Strip on Sunday, including five police officers, according to medics and the Hamas-run interior ministry.
Three people died in an airstrike in Gaza City’s Rimal neighbourhood. Hospital sources at al-Shifa said the dead included a four-year-old boy. Six others were wounded, some critically. The Taj Mall was also hit.
In a separate attack in western Khan Younis, five police officers were killed while on duty in the al-Mawasi area. The interior ministry said the officers were performing routine duties. Nasser Medical Complex received the bodies and treated several wounded. Gaza’s civil defence service confirmed the overall toll of eight, including a child.
The Israeli military said it struck several militants in Khan Younis. It did not immediately comment on the Gaza City strike. A spokesperson later told AFP the force was targeting a terrorist in southern Gaza.
Hamas condemned the attacks as a deliberate war crime. It said the strikes undermine the Gaza peace deal that took effect in October 2025. The interior ministry noted that Israeli attacks have killed 75 police officers and security personnel since that ceasefire began.
Local reports described the Khan Younis strike as hitting a populated area near displacement tents and a school. Children fled through the streets after two drone missiles landed. In Gaza City, witnesses saw the aftermath on Revolution Street.
Nearly all of the more than two million residents live in the remaining third of the enclave among ruins. Most shelter in makeshift tents or damaged buildings. Palestinian health officials say at least 1,500 people have been killed in Israeli attacks since the ceasefire. Israel reports four soldiers killed in the same period. Overall Palestinian deaths since October 2023 exceed 74,000 according to local authorities.
Israel has stepped up strikes in recent weeks, citing Hamas rearming and violations. Hamas denies launching attacks or rebuilding its arsenal. The latest incidents add to daily friction along the fragile pause.
Emergency crews reported additional wounded across central and southern Gaza on Monday morning. Quadcopter drones also opened fire in parts of Gaza City overnight. The pattern continues as both sides accuse the other of undermining the deal.
