Israel shuts the British consulate in East Jerusalem after the settlement ban

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar said on Tuesday, 8 September, that Israel will close the British consulate in East Jerusalem. The consulate is accredited to the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank. Sa’ar presented the decision as a reply to Britain’s plan, announced the same day with France and Canada, to block imports from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.

He said he had coordinated the package with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Israel holds an election in late October. In a recorded statement at the Foreign Ministry, Sa’ar called the British move morally distorted and a blatant interference in the affairs of a sovereign state and its electoral process. He labelled comments by Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband as outrageous lies. He also tied the response to what he called a series of anti-Israel decisions by the Labour government over two years.

The rest of the Israeli list is operational, not only symbolic. Britain will no longer take part in the U.S.-led coordination mission for Gaza, based at the International Gaza Support Center in Kiryat Gat. The British Support Team in Ramallah, which trains Palestinian Authority security forces, will be ended. Twelve British elected officials and other nationals whom Israel accuses of antisemitic and anti-Israel activity will be barred from entering the country.

Britain, France and Canada announced national bans on settlement goods. Nine other European states joined a political statement that stops short of an EU regulation. The trade effect is small. Settlement exports to those markets are modest. The political effect is larger. London used language about ethnic cleansing in the West Bank. Washington’s ambassador in Israel criticised the ban. The United Kingdom and other governments have also pointed to construction in the E1 area east of Jerusalem, which would cut the West Bank’s north-south link around the city.

The East Jerusalem consulate has long been Britain’s channel to Palestinian officials. Closing it removes that channel without closing the embassy to Israel. Expelling British officers from the Gaza cell and the Ramallah training team cuts two practical roles London has kept during the war. The travel bans add a personal cost for named MPs.

Sa’ar framed the British package as domestic politics ahead of the Labour Party conference this month. Miliband’s Commons speech is the text Israel is answering. The sequence now runs from a trade measure that is largely symbolic to a consular closure that is not. How long the consulate building stays staffed, and whether Paris and Ottawa face a similar reply, will show whether Tuesday was a one-country reprisal or the start of a wider freeze.
